Prayer to Amphitrite
by Onyx Mahon
O Amphitrite, queen of the bounded sea,
Lady on your throne of shells
Or riding the crests of the green waves
In your delicate shell-chariot
Drawn by rearing seahorses,
Daughter of Nereus who stood out
Like a pearl, like a blue-green gem
Among the dancing forms of your sisters,
And so won Poseidon's turbulent heart
That he placed you on his throne for love,
Help me as I navigate this challenge.
For I too love a man with a roaring heart,
Kindly and vengeful by sudden turns,
Exploding with joy and stormy with sorrow,
Ready to embrace or strike out
With the force of the wave that destroys whole cities.
Show me how to cool his brow, to calm his waters
Until he will see reason, or at least forget his grudge.
Show me how to guide him to serenity,
Or as much as is possible for one such as he.
Guide me through the heaving waves of my fear
So that I may be an anchor for us both.
O Amphitrite, hold out your salt-rimed hand
And lead me safe to an island of peace.
